Today is VE (Victory in Europe) day as obviously most, if not all of you, will be aware. In some European countries it is always marked by a public holiday as for example in France. In the UK, which traditionally holds its public or “bank holidays” on a Monday, the holiday has been moved to today to coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE day.
Particularly for the older generation VE day is likely to be a poignant and emotional day. Although I certainly am not yet counted amongst this aforementioned generation, bearing in mind the extra challenges of our Corona times and the feelings of loneliness and despondency that have surely been exacerbated by this crisis, I felt that we could perhaps all do with a lighthearted story to “cheer us up” or lift our spirits. To my mind, the crazy antics of the Belgian woman who, not owning a car, decided to make one out of cardboard so that she and her daughter could get a meal at their local drive through McDonalds, fits the bill perfectly! I do hope the following article makes you smile or cheers you up if needed, as this was my first and foremost objective.
Additionally, if you don’t already know it, it gives me the opportunity to draw your attention to “The Brussels Times”. I only discovered this publication a couple of days ago but first impressions are good. It seems an excellent way to get your daily dose of Belgian news in English. I hope you like it.
