I would have liked to have known the answer immediately…

Well I thought I did but on reflection I was left feeling discombobulated!

I gave a student the sentence “I would have liked to have worked on it”.

Later I thought, should it have been, “I would have liked to work on it”???

Now I think that my gut reaction was correct as the initial comment was made in the context of “but I didn’t have time”.

Any thoughts on this?
